Lyme disease: the facts

Home > The ME Association Shop > Medical Management > Lyme disease: the facts

Lyme disease is a serious infection spread to humans by tick bites. Because it has a number of symptoms that are very similar to ME/CFS, it can sometimes be misdiagnosed as ME/CFS.

But there is an increasing concern about the way in which some of the tests available in the private medical sector provide inaccurate diagnoses and lead to the prescription of unnecessary courses of powerful antibiotics. And lack of medical education about Lyme disease leads to late diagnosis and misdiagnosis.

In this leaflet, ME Association medical adviser Dr Charles Shepherd discusses everything you probably need to know about Lyme disease – how it’s tested and the drawbacks there, the symptoms and signs, how best to remove ticks from their usually hidden burrows in the skin, treatments available and how Lyme can become horribly chronic if not treated early enough.
