Liberal Democrat peer Lord Carlile of Berriew tabled a question asking why the Government categorised ME as a non-organic disease, whether they planned to review that, and what treatments were available to sufferers. In a written answer on 10 December 2009, Baroness Thornton who speaks in the Lords on health matters replied: "Chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME) is categorised as a long-term neurological condition of unknown cause. Although there is currently no effective treatment for CFS/ME, cognitive behavioural therapy, graded exercise therapy, pacing and other lifestyle changes, as well as medication to relieve pain and depression have proved useful for some patients."
