Enjoying the great outdoors in a wheelchair

A new website illustrating walks round the UK recommended by people who use wheelchairs has been given the seal of approval of the Ramblers' Association.

The website – walkswithwheelchairs - is mentioned in the organisation's latest newsletter.

One MEA member, who receives Ramblers' Association literature, told us today: "This is something badly needed for some time and I am so glad to see someone has done it. I have submitted my first walk and have loads more to enter when I have time".

Each walk is represented by a thick blue line drawn on an OS Explorer map (which actually loads on screen quickly with a good set of navigation tools). It is accompanied by a brief description of the route and the terrain and any outstanding things to look out for. The person who has sent in the details is identified by name. People registered with the site can enter their own reviews.

The aim is to use routes which are as flat as possible - with any obstructions, toilets and watering holes clearly marked.
