Alex Fergusson has been elected as the new Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament. Mr Fergusson, who has a son with ME, was deputy convenor of the Parliament's Cross Party Group on ME before Scotland went to the polls on May 3.
Mr Fergusson, who is aged 57, was re-elected Conservative and Unionist Party MSP for Galloway and Upper Nithsdale with a significantly increased majority of 3,333 – after polling a total of 13,387 votes. Now, like the Speaker of the House of Commons at Westminster, he takes on a non-party political role. Outgoing Presiding Officer George Reid told the Parliament on Monday: ""You have just elected a decent and honourable man to head this house.
Mr Fergusson was keynote speaker at an ME Association conference held just outside Edinburgh in September 2002. We wish him every success in his exciting new appointment.
