'Pulse' magazine for doctors today reports (news on p2) that NICE has drastically revised its proposals for patients with osteoporosis. The U-turn involves removing the most severe of the original age restrictions after coming under what is described as 'a barrage of criticisms from clinical groups over its original plans on primary and secondary prevention' of osteoporosis. Professor Peter Littlejohns, clinical and public health director of NICE, is quoted as saying "The new draft recommendations make it easier for postmenopausal women to receive treatment". Dr Peter Stott, a medical member of the National Osteoporosis Society, is quoted as saying that there had been "immense pressure" on NICE in relation to osteoporosis. Brief comment: Professor Peter Littlejohns was the representative from NICE who came along with Dr Esther Crawley to the APPG meeting to defend their proposed guidance on ME/CFS. NICE appears to have done a U-turn on osteoporsis as a result of 'immense pressure' from both clinicians and patients. This appears to be a very good reason for keeping up the pressure on NICE in relation to their proposed ME/CFS guidance. The ME Association has written to NICE once again this week on a specific issue and we are currently co-ordinating a response to the House of Commons Select Committee on Health inquiry into NICE.
